Waymo’s expansion gives more people a driverless ride option. Its usefulness still depends on whether it serves the trip you actually need.
The September 1 announcement opened rides to selected users in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, with access expanding gradually. An earlier February 24 rollout used the same invitation approach in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Orlando.
For a household deciding whether to keep a second car, the meaningful unit is a completed journey. A city name on a launch list cannot tell you whether the school run, evening appointment or last connection home is covered.
A service map is the beginning of the decision
As checked October 12, Waymo’s current rides page lists these markets among places serving riders and supplies service maps. That is more useful than an old invitation announcement, but it does not establish access for every account or address.
Put the exact origin and destination into the appropriate booking app. Check the pickup location as carefully as the destination: a nearby permitted curb can be awkward if someone has limited mobility, luggage or a child who cannot comfortably walk there. The question is how the service handles your constraints, rather than whether the car can drive through the neighborhood.
A hypothetical family might find its usual restaurant inside the service area and a relative’s house outside it. Robotaxis could cover the first trip perfectly while leaving the second unchanged. Counting both as evidence that the household can abandon car ownership would distort the decision.
Compare the whole journey
The app’s offered trip provides a starting point for comparing fare, wait and routing with transit, a conventional ride or driving. Parking cost belongs in that comparison, but so does the inconvenience of a missed connection. A cheap ride that adds uncertainty before a flight can be poor value.
Treat airports, child seating, accessibility and severe-weather operation as separate questions. This article does not establish blanket support for those needs across the new cities. Confirm the relevant policy and an actual bookable route before relying on them.
There is also a useful difference between occasional access and dependable repetition. Someone who takes a leisurely weekend ride learns how the experience feels. Someone trying to commute needs to know whether it fits the same time window repeatedly. Neither experience, by itself, proves a comparative safety advantage.
More places to operate means more places to earn trust
Expansion gives Waymo additional demand and operating experience. Riders who dislike driving or parking may gain a convenient alternative. Conventional ride providers and drivers could face competition on covered journeys; households outside the useful service area may see little benefit.
The broader shift is transportation bought by the trip instead of maintained as a personal asset. That can change a household budget, but only when enough ordinary journeys are covered at acceptable cost. We have not measured those savings or service reliability.
Waymo has an incentive to make city growth legible. Readers have an incentive to make their own travel obligations legible. The launch announcement answers the first question more readily than the second.
For now, try a flexible journey before reorganizing a routine. Save the actual fare, pickup delay and any extra walking. Use that experience to decide which trips belong in the app and which still need another option. The next meaningful expansion is one that fills a gap in your travel pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Denver, San Diego and Tampa still require launch invitations?
The September announcement described selected invitations. The current website lists rider service, but your account and proposed trip need an in-app check; the original invitation policy is not a reliable universal rule today.
Does a listed city mean every neighborhood is covered?
City listings and service maps have different purposes. Check both endpoints, pickup access and the offered route.
Can I assume the airport is included?
Airport access needs specific confirmation. A service operating elsewhere in a city does not establish airport pickup or drop-off availability.
Is a test ride enough to decide whether to sell a car?
A test ride helps assess one journey. A car-replacement decision needs a budget and coverage check across the household’s recurring obligations, including trips outside the service area.
